Already, not yet

I can't help but write about the butterflies right now. They are everywhere. If you are anywhere other than Colorado, there has been a Monarch butterfly migration through our state this past week.  To me, they are like little love notes from God. Just when I think there is nothing to smile about on any given day, out pops a butterfly, or two, or a whole swarm!
I have always loved the butterfly analogy and how it relates to us humans.  We so desperately want to be the thing we were created to be but we aren't there yet. It's like we are stuck. It is a strange tension between the already, not yet. Think about the life cycle of the butterfly. It is already a butterfly by its nature, but not yet. It doesn't know it yet because it has to go through the refining process. It is destined to become something more. It is a butterfly in progress. It's called something different before it actually emerges, but it is still a butterfly. It has to go through a journey, maybe a long one, maybe short one. It might be hard road or an easy path to travel. Once it arrives at a destination, it goes into the chrysalis (aka. cocoon). For two weeks, it undergoes some magical process. I am sure there are some of you who actually know what happens but for us, non-sciency people, let's call it magic. Once the transformation happens, it emerges. It begins to fly.

We are so much like this already/not yet insect. We are born destined to be more. Our journey on the ground is just a small part of who we really are. When we accept the gift of salvation, we are called new creations.

2 Cor 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come!

But we aren't done yet. We won't emerge from our cocoons until we are made complete.
In fact, I don't think we will even get to crawl out of those little brown transforming houses until the end of our lives.

Phil. 1:6 -  For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect until the day of Christ Jesus.

Until that day, we all get to crawl around being butterfly trapped in a caterpillar body. And that's okay. Because we are already, but not yet.

In what ways are we like caterpillars?
In what ways are we like butterflies?
